Te3n Movie (2016) – a Viewer’s Review

List of Contents

Sujoy Ghosh, Vidya Balan, and Kolkata connection –  these ‘Te3n’ led me and perhaps would lead most Indian audiences to believe that it is Kahani-2. Kahaani movie had the perfect blend of drama, mystery, thrill and the plot that even today I cannot get over it and see each time it comes on TV just to find a loose end in the story. Alas, I haven’t managed to find one but coming back to ‘Te3n’ movie, the urge to see another power packed mysterious thriller film compelled me to rush and book a ticket for this film.
The movie is the official Indian remake of a Korean movie, ‘Montage’, whose rights has by Sujoy Ghosh. However, unlike Kahaani, ‘Te3n’ movie hasn’t been directed by Sujoy but by Ribhu Dasgupta.

What Worked for Me:

  • Somehow I am not a very  big fan of Amitabh Bachchan. But his recent few films have drawn me to accept the genius behind this great legend. He has delivered yet another stupendous performance in his role of ‘John Biswas’ in this film. It seems that the role had been written for him only and no other actor could step in his shoes and do in such ingenuity.
  • The songs and the music are subtle & full of grief in the genre but will make you notice and like them especially the song ‘Kyun re’ sung by Amitabh Bachchan is really good.
  • Two chase sequences in the film on the railway station is shot well.
  • The supporting cast is strong.
  • The film has a certain old school charm but yet manages to en-captivate the audience.

What Didn’t Work for Me:

  • The film lacked in role development of Vidya Balan & Sabyasachi Chakrabarty’s characters in the film. Vidya was simply wasted in the film. Any other actor or even a supporting actor could have been roped in their places.
  • The story narration was laid back, and jumbled up which though would be acceptable in a novel but certainly not in a film.
  • Kolkata city hasn’t been utilized much in the film to add to the mystery, only cliched Kali Puja is shown in a scene or two.
  • The movie lacks the drama, mystery, and a nail-biting end as was expected from a Sujoy Ghosh film.
  • In contrast to Kahaani where Sujoy Ghosh had directed, written the story & screenplay and produced the film here there are several different people to do these all functions. When there is one person who has a concept in mind and is active in all spheres of its development then he ensures that the functions matches up to his conceptualization. But here too many cooks have spoiled a good broth.
  • After watching the film I noticed that the film’s title is quite irrelevant. There is no connection of the number ‘three’ with the film except for the fact that there are three leading actors in the film out of which Vidya Balan’s  role has been written off as a guest appearance.
  • Loose ends in the story are many like where are the daughter and son-in-law of Joy Biswas etc.

Story:

Eight years before John Biswas (Amitabh Bachchan) and his wife looses their grand-daughter in a kidnapping incident. He continues to live a life of guilt and sorrow and daily visits police station in a hope that someday he may find some clue of the kidnapper. Meanwhile the police inspector, ‘Martin’ (Nawazuddin Siddiqui)  who was investigating this case after the setback forgoes the worldly life to become a priest. One fine day, John Biswas gets a clue and starts investigation again to finally catch hold of the man behind the kidnapping. Meanwhile there is a similar sort of kidnapping that happens in the city and the police team headed by Vidya Balan along with the support of Siddiqui are in search of this child and the kidnapper. The end is the suspense of the film.

My Verdict:

3 Stars out of 5. A lot of buzz was there about this movie, but ‘Te3n’ is a disappointment for people who had loved Kahaani movie and Sujoy Ghosh marvelous direction. I am sure if he had taken the reins of this film in his hand he would have done far more justice to a good story. However, Amitabh Bacchan’s effort in bringing to life the character of grieving grandfather whose determination to find the man behind his loss is one of the major reasons for watching this film.
