Poorna Movie (2017) – A Viewer’s Review

‘Poorna’ movie is Rahul Bose’s directorial venture which revolves around the real-life story of a 13-year-old tribal girl, Poorna Malavath. It is not every day that a teenager sets his or her foot on Mount Everest and conquers it to become ‘The Youngest Girl in the World to Climb Mt. Everest’!

What Worked for Me:

  • The simplicity with which the director Rahul Bose has shaped the movie.

  • The friendship between the two girls.

  • The length of the movie. It’s perfect and doesn’t have many unnecessary scenes dragging the movie.

  • The strong narrative of the movie which displays the stark difference between the life of an impoverished tribal girl and the girl who is determined to make something much more meaningful out of her life than getting married.

  • Mount Everest is such a beauty in itself and the expedition of Poorna is beautifully shot.

  • The two little girls namely Aditi Inamdar & S. Mariya have followed the instructions pretty well. The outcome, of course, is that they are able to portray both their characters brilliantly. They have childlike charm and yet look intelligent enough to handle situations at the same time, much similar to most teenagers of today.

What Didn’t Work for Me:

  • The songs didn’t work in favor of the film. The background score was good though but could have been better and with little less volume.

  • There are certain parts of the story where it seems a bit too hurried to reach the next milestone of the story.

  • Rahul bose did try to underplay his stature of a known actor but couldn’t really help in that area thereby overshadowing the other characters in few scenes.

  • It is released in only a few theaters & multiplexes.

I will give this film 4/5 stars.

After 16 long years actor/director Rahul Bose who is famous for films like Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, and  Pyaar Ke Side Effects, has revisited film direction with ‘Poorna’. It is an inspiring story in itself but not many directors would have thought of making a film around it. The film is refreshing in its storyline as against thrillers and cliched romantic flicks. Such inspiring stories should be told more often in Indian cinema to make people aware of the ground realities of life.

Poorna is a story of a young girl with a lot of legitimate reasons to crib about her life. But what she did as an underdog to make out of her life will inspire almost every person sitting in the audience and watching the film! Summer holidays of children are ongoing, which makes the film, ‘Poorna‘, a must watch for parents & children!
