As we write this article, we are deeply shocked and mourned by the absolutely sudden demise of popular superstar actress Sridevi. She was one of the most adorable multifaceted actors of Bollywood. She was known for her impeccable comic timing and dance style. In her 54 years of life and almost 50 years of film career, Sridevi worked in more than 300 films in Hindi and other regional languages of India. In 2014, she was awarded one of the biggest national honour Padamshri for her noteworthy contribution in Indian cinema.

Released in 1983, Sadma was Sridevi’s different film opposite Kamal Hassan. In the film, she portrayed a character of a young girl who suffers memory loss. After which she is taken care by Kamal Hassan until he falls in love with her. However, as a part of ill-fated destiny, Sridevi gets well and forgets Kamal Hassan and unknowingly returns to her original family leaving Kamal disturbed. Songs like Ae Zindagi gale laga le were soul touching.

Released in 1993, this was one of the mega-budget movies of Sridevi. This film bombed on box office despite the hit lead pair of Sridevi & Anil Kapoor. However, Sridevi looked glamorous in the film and the song album was a hit then. By this film also the term ‘Roop ki Rani’ got associated with Sridevi forever. Post this film in 1996, Sridevi got married to Boney Kapoor, a leading film producer and elder brother of Anil Kapoor.

Chandni is one of the most memorable movies of Sridevi. It was released in 1989 and Rishi Kapoor was the lead male actor against Sridevi. This film was a mega success. The film’s story, songs and the chemistry between the lead pair was the magic behind the film’s success. Sridevi’s the then sheer fashion sarees in chiffon fabric became the most sought-after trend in those days. For this Yashraj film, Sridevi received Filmfare Best actress award. This was one movie of those days that had a story woven around a female as the central character and had two leading heroes opposite her.

A story of a female snake having the powers of turning into a human was a novel idea. This movie of Sridevi that came in 1986 was super hit movie and became a top grosser for that year despite a female being the central character. The film had Rishi Kapoor as the male lead opposite Sridevi and Amrish Puri & Sushma Seth were the supporting actors. The songs Main teri dushman.. is an immortal song when one talks about snake and snake charmers in India.

As Priyanka Chopra rightly tweeted remembering Sridevi,

“Ye Lamhe, ye pal hum har pal yaad karenge.. ye Mausam chale gaye toh hum fariyad karenge.”

So is the loss of this superstar actress who acted in Lamhe (1991). She was seen in a double role in this film set in Rajasthan and London. The film was a flop in India while it gained success post its release. While in U.K., the film was a super-duper hit. The beauty of Sridevi was rightly captured in songs like Morni Baga ma.. and more songs. Both her looks in Indian ethnic and western were fabulous.

This movie was the comeback movie of Sridevi in Bollywood. The movie which was based on a simple homemaker from India who learns English to gain the respect in the eyes of her husband and family touched many hearts. Thus English-Vinglish became a super success and it also was the official entry of India for Oscars in Foreign Film Category. Sridevi looked gorgeous in Sari. She looked much younger to her real age in this film that was released in 2012.

Mr. India became an iconic movie not just for Sridevi but also in the Indian film history. Directed by Shekhar Kapur & written by Salim-Javed the film had Anil Kapoor and Sridevi as the lead pair. Basically, it was children’s movie with an angle of superhero and some bits of romance and comedy. Sridevi’s comical character of a journalist in the film is difficult to forget. Her performance in Hawa Hawai song, in the famous parody and the fighting sequence as Charlie Chaplin, is worth remembering.

Other movies that also standout in Sridevi’s Hindi film career are Khuda Gawah where she starred opposite Amitabh Bachchan, Chalbaaz, Janbaaz, Karma, and more. Her last full-fledged movie was Mom which was released in 2017. While she will be seen in a cameo posthumous in Shahrukh Khan’s upcoming film Zero. The untimely death of this great Hindi film actress is deeply saddening and a national loss.
