No matter how humorous this photo story may look like but trust me I did go bonkers seeing the drool-worthy Singaporean takeaway depicted in the photo.
Singapore and Food Connection????
Over the years, Singapore has become famous for being a culturally diverse city; welcoming people from nations like China, India, Japan and other South East Asian countries.
People, from around the globe come here to see places like Marina Bay Sands, the iconic Singaporean statue of Merlion, Singapore Flyer, Resort World Sentosa, Universal Studios, Marine Life park and Jurong Bird Park.
Talking about food there is a range of delicacies available out of which some dishes are indigenous and some which have evolved with the influence of neighboring countries that constitute in making Singapore – a foodie’s delight.
During your stay here one can expect to see restaurants serving food of Singapore, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Thai and many other cuisines.
Few Singaporean dishes for which I can
Beg, Borrow or Steal!
This could be one of the principal foods for me which I can eat on a daily basis. In Singapore, it is available in a number of variations. But the most popular one is the Hainanese style chicken rice. It is eaten with sweet dark sauce, chili sauce and finely chopped ginger.
Being an Indian how can I miss Roti Prata! Inspired from Indian flat breads (Roti and fried flat breads, ‘Paratha’) this is a dish that I can have at any time of the day. In Singapore, it comes with a lot of variations to appeal to both sweet and savory liking people. Roti Tissue, Roti Prata with egg, cheese, curry and contemporary versions with chocolate and ice-cream are easily available in Singaporean streets and restaurants.
A breakfast staple, Kaya toast is a sweet delight to kick start your day in Singapore. Basically, it is a bread toast smeared with coconut jam filling inside. Yummm…isn’t it? I would love to enjoy it with a cup of black coffee (called ‘Kopi O’ in Singapore).
Well I am literally salivating after thinking about all these yummy dishes of Singapore and like me if you are a true foodie you must be wanting to get up and make something spectacular until you visit Singapore and taste the authentic stuff.
So I leave you with this awesome recipe for Chilli Crab Singaporean style.
1 No. Large Crab cleaned nicely
2 Nos. Roughly chopped Onions
8 Nos. Chopped Red Chillies
125 ml. Oil
3 tsp. Shrimp Paste
250 ml. Tomato Puree
60 ml. Light Soy Sauce
55 gms. White Sugar
1 tbsp. Tomato Paste
2 tsp. White Vinegar
½ tsp. Salt
¼ tsp. Cornflour mixed with 125 ml water
1 No. Egg – lightly beaten
Coriander leaves for garnishing
Remove the top shell of the crab and chop it into quarter pieces. Crack the claws and place in a bowl.
Make a paste of onion and red chili.
Heat the oil in a pan and now add the onion and chili paste & shrimp paste.
Saute for 6-7 minutes until the paste is almost done. After which add the tomato puree, light soy sauce, sugar, tomato paste, vinegar and salt, and stir thoroughly.
Next add liquid cornflour paste and let the mix come to a boil.
Add the crab pieces and cook, with the lid on, over a medium heat for 10 minutes. Stirring occasionally.
Lastly stir in the egg and garnish with coriander.
