An After Thought

The first step towards an Independent Life..

It is often said –
“The distance is nothing, it’s only the first step that is difficult.”
So true, don’t you feel so? I often contemplate on this point especially each time after life takes a new turn, opens a fresh new page for me to scribble it with successes and failures. With each passing day, the diary of my life has become more robust and I am sure you, my readers, would also agree to have a life filled with such good and bad changes.
One of the major change came in my life when I decided to pursue management course. I wanted to get admission in a good college to make sure a good and secured career ahead. Once the entrance exam for the same got over, I started getting interview calls from various colleges in different cities.
To be honest till the time I hadn’t received the interview calls I was confident with the idea of shifting to other cities and living alone but seeing the call letters had shaken me a little. For the first time, I was practically thinking whether I would be able to manage and live alone.
Interviews went by and I chose a college in Pune for carrying out further studies. The time came when I had to join the college and before that finalize a place for staying. I thought a hostel would be the safest and most convenient option for me to stay and so I approached the college for  availing hostel facility. To my surprise, all the rooms in the college had already been taken up and so I was left with no other option but to search a place to stay near the college premises.
I had never visited Pune city before and so was a complete stranger to this big city. I started searching for paying guest accommodations near my college and after a couple of tries I managed to get hold of a good P.G. Two days before the formal session commencement I shifted in my P.G. It was not a conventional paying guest accommodation rather one could describe it similar to a home-stay with owners living on the ground floor.
As I entered the place I saw it was a small little room with big windows overlooking a few neighbouring houses. As I stood looking at the room a lady from the family who owned the place came and politely spoke to me. She has a cup of tea and Maharashtra’s staple snack ‘Wada-Pav’ in her hand for me. She offered it to me and told me that I didn’t have to worry about food as she would also give me that obviously with in return for some payment.
By the end of the first day, I had settled down in the room technically arranging everything. In the night, my first away from home was tough. I couldn’t sleep initially that night and a number of weird thoughts came to my mind. As the sun came up and I opened my eyes to realise that I had fallen asleep and that all was okay.
This was a big confidence booster for me and after that I never shied away from living an independent life. Within few days of college, I had made a couple of friends. Soon I got busy studying and exploring the fabulous city of Pune. Eventually, I fell in love with the city and with the idea of living an independent life. So much, so that I never wanted to leave the city and had tears rolling down my cheeks on the day I bid adieu to the city.
I guess barring a handful of people this happens to most people, one can never forget the first things or events happened in his or her life especially those events that one had to handle independently.
Events like these are in my opinion the big leap of faith that are an inspiration for a lifetime. If you have any such story do share.
